65 13 window deluxe

Postby bugdust » Fri Feb 05, 2010 8:44 pm

I traded my 62 ragtop for a 65 13-window deluxe.

So far I have started taking the paint off of the body with a DA. Then I blasted the nose, welded (single tack) a small hole near the windshield and primed the nose. I took it over to (Middleburg) Mike's and he put my 1776 in it, went through the brakes and wiring, had a custom exhaust made and a few other things. Now, it's back to bodywork, welding in the cargo floors, putting in windows, etc.

The short term plan is to get it on the road and drive it while I collect parts and save money. It will get a quickie flat or satin paint job for now and a nice one later.

Originally I had no plans to lower it but since I now have the kombi as my potential camping bus I might lower this one. It will not get slammed though, probably just turned a spline and flipped spindles. I'm too poor for narrowed beams and straight axles. ;)

Today was welding up 18 trim holes that were in the wrong location. I will re-drill them later. I also welded a few small holes at the long rocker seam. Then, I put some putty in a few spots and did a lot of sanding.

I registered it days ago for WinterJam so I have less than two weeks to have it on the road. I can have it there no problem but I have to work both weeks between now and then and my wife works nights so I have limited time to work on it. (I have a 2 yr old to watch) Anyway, all I really have to get done is weld the cargo floors in and put the windows in, but I'd like to do a little more than that.

I've only had a couple of hours to work on the bus all week. I did fit one half of the cargo floor and start welding it in. I started sorting out my box of rubber only to find out that I have some CIP1 crap, some WCM stuff and some WW stuff and I'm missing a bunch of pieces...so I just ordered $380 worth of new rubber from Wolfsburg West. That used up most of my WinterJam money but I had to have it at some point. The bus will be at WinterJam but It will barely be in primer with no bodywork done.

I scored a passenger walk-through seat today ($$$) and I bought some new windshields. I got the second half of the cargo floor fitted and all the holes drilled in in but that's it.

I have to work all week but I'll have a couple of hours Monday evening and Thursday evening to get the bus ready for WinterJam. My wife works nights so I have our 2 yr old and it's hard to weld and grind with him running around. Hopefully my rubber will be here before Thursday.

To do list:
finish cargo floors
sand as much of the bus as I can & primer
remove bed from 69 westy & install in 65
install all windows
fix oil leak (valve cover gasket?)
fix rear bumper brackets so decklid will close
install front bumper
change tail lights
put license plate on bus
more?

I was wanting to load up some parts to try to sell but I don't know if I will get to that.

I have both halves of the cargo floor in for the most part. I still have 20-30 spots to weld and beat on. I had a few problems because the inner rockers were put in higher than the cross members and a little crooked but it's all good now.

I'll grind all 500 tacks later and coat the floor with something and some seam sealer, etc.

I also scored a passenger seat ($$$)

I can't get the front bumper to go all the way in but I will mess with it more tomorrow.

A couple of color ideas

I still have a long list to get done by Friday.

I did pick up both rocker spears, a full set (front & back) of pointed bumper trim, the long driver side beltline trim and a dash piece to fix the "custom" dash.

I should have loaded up the truck and trailer and tried to sell my 67 bug and some bug parts.

I started on the "temporary" inside panels today. These will probably end up in the kombi once I strip the 13 back down for paint. I'll make or buy some nicer ones then.

These are just 3/16" masonite. The are not perfect but they will do. I'll have less than $30 into them counting the screws. I have a few more panels to make tomorrow.

Oh, the sub-floor is in as well. I have hardwood floors or vinyl I can put in or I might just buy some cheap carpet.

I put another 375 miles on the bus last weekend and I've been driving it to work some so I've put about 1000 miles on it since I got it on the road. The door panels got pretty wet coming back from Lakeland but you can't tell now. I love my bus!

I'm going to sell the 67 kombi soon.

Are you gonna roll it down to Ocala for our stock height bus romp in the woods?

No. I'd like to but I have had quite a few VW weekends lately, either going to pick one up, going to a show or working on one. So, I have a honey-do list I need to get cracking on this weekend before we have company next weekend. Plus, I may be picking another one up next Friday??

I haven't driven this thing since I got the 67 westy. I did pull the 1776 out of it the other day and replace the main seal and the flywheel. The starter had been dragging on the flywheel and chewed it up. I'm going to sell this bus so I have to decide if I want to put the 1776 back in it or switch out the 1600 from my westy. Decisions, decisions. I need to adjust the carb, change the starter and adjust the brakes as well.

I'll be posting this on thesamba soon. It's a hard decison. This bus is in way better shape than my 67 westy...but I like my westy and it is pretty complete. Well, not really, it is missing the tent, rack and closet. I've driven both about 2k miles each. The 13-window has gone to WinterJam and Lakeland, plus a lot of local driving, without a hitch. The westy has went to Ginnie Springs and a lot of local driving without a hitch. Most of the metal work on the 13 is done. The westy needs a lot!!! The 13 has a 1776, the westy has a 1600. The 13 has headlights, tail lights and brake lights...and interior lights. Everything works on the westy except the backup lights. Both will cruise all day long at 65-70. Both will bury the speedo but the 13 window will do it easily. I don't really want to sell either of them but I don't need two buses and I do need some cash.

I sold this bus last weekend...or the weekend before? No, last weekend? Anyway. It left with the 1776 in it, the Scat shifter, the stock rear seat, the bay 2/3 middle, the box of new WW rubber ($900 worth), new windshields, new brakes, all the deluxe trim, jailbars, bumper guards & overriders, the nice passenger walk-thru seat, etc. I should have kept it but I needed the money.

I am keeping part of the money from this sale to put into my westy. I have a front clip coming from PA...will take a few weeks to relay it down here. I've been pricing metal, just have to finalize what is coming from WW and what will be green. I'm going to look at a correct 67 camper interior for it tomorrow. I have a bay bed and no closet in mine now. While I'm on the WW website I'm betting some rubber and misc camper bits jump into the cart.
